I’ve really enjoyed these last few months in the studio working on a new album with Lloyd Maines.  I’ve been wondering what to call this new collection of songs.  If I could pick a word to describe this project it would be “unexpected”. I hadn’t really planned on recording any of them, I started writing them about 2 yrs ago or so.  I went on what you might say was a quest to seek out some new experiences with music and people.
I’ve always been a fan of the music in Louisiana, so I went to the Blue Moon Saloon in Lafayette to see Horace Trahan and the Ossun Express.  Horace is a zydeco musician in the tradition of Clifton Chenier and Boozoo Chavis from Ossun LA, and man he had that place packed and jumpin’ all night long.  I can’t dance but I can sure tap my foot and it was tapping like crazy because the music and atmosphere were electric to me.
It is really something to see Cajun people dance.  I mean it is like an explosion or a chain reaction and everyone is invited to the party.  I saw all kinds of people together on the dance floor (it was a small dance floor and everybody was smashed up together real close and nobody was ashamed)   It is just as much fun as Texas but a little bit different if you ask me.
The next day I spent New Years Eve in Eunice LA at the Savoy Music Center, I bought a little Hohner squeezebox from Marc Savoy himself.  He said “I love this little accordion” and sold it to me.   I told him I was from Austin and that I had a passion for Southwestern Louisiana, he said “You ought to move down here man” I have yet to take him on that but I’m not ruling it out of the old bucket list.
I also bought a rub board for my brother.   It was a late Christmas present, plus I figured one day I might need a band.
I came home to Texas that night with an idea that whatever I did next with music I wanted to make some room for the little squeezebox that I felt Mr Savoy had selected for me.
These songs are about hard knocks, new love, coon asses, gamblers, south Texas shrimpers and Canadian folk singers (I bagged me a pretty one by the way).  Some of these songs are pretty rough around the edges but I believe that the universe will meet you in the middle if you put a little love out there.  I hope that they are a tribute to life and the way we march forward.
I’m calling this new album “Let it Choose You”  in honor of a conversation I had with a friend of mine who said “Songs Choose Us… make yourself willing to receive them”
This record is really a continuation of that idea,  it’s because of your support that I’ve been able to let the songs choose me.  I can only hope that one of them will choose you. (Adam Carroll)
